Cassandra Marie Melendez (64) passed into the Lord’s Kingdom on the morning of February 27th, 2025. She died peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones. Cassandra was born November 16, 1960 in East Chicago, Indiana. To those who knew her personally, she was just “Cassy.” Cassy was preceded in death by Gloria A. Jiron (mother), Carmelo Melendez (father), and Jacquline (Keith) Thomas (sister).
Cassy is survived by her sisters and brothers, Melissa Melendez, Jimmy Melendez, Marisol (Keith) Miner, Joseph Jiron Sr., and Teresa (Nick) Wilson. She loved and adored her nieces and nephews, Kaeley, Joseph Jr., Jace, Jordan, Piper, Jada and Isabelle. She was loved and supported by her many cousins, as well as, friends, students and co-workers. Cassy was also the proud dog-mom to Harrison.
Cassy dedicated the majority of her life to children. From an early age, she worked at the library and as a lifeguard at the Washington Park pool. Cassy was involved in youth groups and church functions. She was a fan of theater and did some acting herself. She taught as an art, writing, preschool, even gym teacher. Cassy was a board council member at St. Paul Lutheran Church/preschool in East Chicago as the education chairperson. Cassy championed children throughout her life, especially through her faith. Her passion for education, music and the arts inspired many lives. She spent much of her professional career at The Academy for Learning in Dolton, IL before finally retiring.
Cassy loved the beach and the outdoors. She adored vacations with the family and her favorite place to be was Mexico. She was a fierce lover of music and art. She learned to play the flute and was a beautiful guitar player. Cassy loved to read and watch scary movies. Spending time with family was paramount, but her nieces and nephews were her true joy. She had a strong faith in the Lord and was never hesitant to share that faith in scripture, song and fellowship. Cassy leaves a strong legacy and many fond memories with all that knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Cassy. We love you.
