Eliseo Castaneda Obituary

Eliseo “Vitamins” Castaneda, age 93, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran from East Chicago, IN passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 8, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Consuelo O. Castaneda; parents, Aniceto Sr. and Carolina Castaneda; and brothers, Aniceto Jr. and Senovia Castaneda.  Eliseo is survived by his sisters: Beatrice (late Ubaldo) Zamarron, Yolanda (Mario) Guajardo and Mary Ellen (late  Miguel) Perez; sister in-law, Janet Lee (late Senovio) Musial-Castaneda; many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Eliseo was a Korean War U.S. Marine Corps Veteran.  He enlisted in July of 1948 and was Honorably Discharged in July of 1952 at the rank of Sergeant.  He received his first Purple Heart for wounds received as a result of action with enemy forces in November 20, 1950 in Chosin Reservoir, Korea, and his second Purple Heart during enemy action on June 2, 1951 in Inje, Korea.  His decorations include: Purple Heart with Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with four Bronze Stars, Korean Service Medal with Silver Star. National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupational Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, United Nation Medal, United Nation Service Medal, and Republic of Korean War Service.

After his discharge from the Marines, Eliseo returned back to East Chicago, IN.  A month later, he reported back to work at Inland Steel Company until his retirement in June 1992.  In 1958, Eliseo married his high school sweetheart, the late Consuelo Ortega who passed away May 21, 2023.  They were married for 64 years.  Eliseo’s work in the community included supporting fellow veterans and serving on the original committee for the Community Veterans Memorial.  “A VERY PROUD MARINE”.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 3510 Deodar Street, East Chicago, IN with Rev. Diego Florez officiating.  Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN.  Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the Church on Friday morning.  In lieu of Flowers or Cards, please send donations in memory of Sgt.
