Elvira "Mama" Flores, age 88 of East Chicago, IN passed away Friday, December 8, 2023 at home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Eriberto J. Flores in 2000 and her infant children, Juanita and John. She is survived by 4 children: Elizabeth (John) Mladenik, Martha (Bill) Purcell, Maria (Richard) Lopez and Bert Flores, Jr.; 7 grandchildren: Brady (Reneé Dankanich) Purcell, Billy Purcell, Jessica (Justin) Schmidt, Maria (Keyur Karandikar) Mladenik, Monica (Kevin Zayas) Mladenik, Eric (Olivia Green) Flores and Melissa (Jesse Ramos) Mladenik; 2 great grandchildren: Julian and Evelyn Flores; siblings: Felipa Sandoval, Elena Gomez and Macario Gonzalez; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Eustolio Gonzalez and Sabina Cruz Gonzalez; 11 siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 11:30 am at St. Stanislaus Church, 808 West 150th Street, East Chicago, IN with Msgr. John Siekierski officiating. Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 11:30 am at the Church on Thursday morning.
She was a devoted housewife, mother, and grandmother. She had a talent for crocheting, she loved flowers and took great pride in caring for her garden, she was also an avid Bingo player, she was an amazingly talented cook and loved to watch her family enjoy her food, she also loved to feed the birds and squirrels daily. She also deeply loved her fur babies, Meechie-nena, Shakira, Lola, Bogey, and Angelina. She was a devout catholic with strong faith that helped her through many hardships in life including surviving for more than 30 years after her battle with cancer. She was a hard worker her whole life and was always busy at something, she did not like sitting still. She was feisty and had a great sense of humor.
