Eugene "Gene" James Korba of Hammond, IN passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the age of 82 after several months of delclining health. Gene died peacefully with his beloved wife, Barbara by his side. Gene was born in East Chicago, Indiana on March 25, 1941 to father, James W. Korba and mother, Rose J. (Setmajer) Korba. He was the middle child of five siblings. He was a 1960 graduate of Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, Indiana.
Gene's passion for photography started in high school and grew as he served in the United States Navy as a Photographer's Mate at Great Lakes Naval Air Base. Photography would define Gene's life in many ways: working as a staff photographer for both U.S. Gypsum and Inland Steel Company; taking wedding, real estate and portrait photos; teaching classes at Calumet College; and having his photos appear in Argus Communications posters in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
Gene is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Barbara Jean (Pondo) Korba; children: James D. (Karen) Korba, Michael J. (Stacy) Korba and Tina Marie Korba; grandchildren: Jacob M. Korba and Jonathon Bach; sister, Irene (Phil) Dombrowksi; brother-in-law, Rev. Stanley L. Pondo; sister-in-law, Cynthia M. (Craig) Neville; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parent; sisters, Rosemarie (Andrew) Poludniak and Margaret A. Korba; brother, Jerome J. (Deborah) Korba; grandson, Corbin Ray Bach; sister-in-law, Joyce (George) Leouses; and brothers-in-law: Ronald W. Pondo and Kenneth A. Pondo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 5, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Stanislaus Church, 808 West 150th Street, East Chicago, IN with Rev. Stanley Pondo officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL. The American Legion Allied Post #369 will conduct Military Honors at the Cemetery on Friday morning.
