Eugene “Karl” Walker, age 74, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025. He will be deeply missed by the many family members and friends who loved him.
Karl is survived by his son, Kristian (Janic); daughter, Amanda (Dan Beardsley); brother, David; sister, Patricia (Paul) Stack; grandchildren, Isabelle and Benjamin; former spouse Kathy and numerous relatives and friends throughout America and in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elisabeth and Ralph Walker, and his sister, Nancy Polito.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Karl cherished his heritage and treasured every opportunity to visit his loved ones there. A devoted father, grandfather, and friend, Karl found his greatest joy in spending time with his family and closest friend—especially his two grandchildren, Ben and Izzy, who absolutely meant the world to him.
Those who knew Karl best remember him as a true giver—a man with a selfless spirit, a generous heart, and a willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Karl worked as an electrician at Inland Steel for 30 years and continued part-time electrical work after retiring—because sitting still was never really his thing. When he wasn’t on a side job, he could be found driving his truck around town aggressively, watching sports or movies from his beloved recliner, using up all his free play at area casinos, or bowling with his longtime league at Plaza Lanes in Highland—where he proudly celebrated strikes and blamed the lanes for splits.
He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and the unwavering support he offered to his family and friends. Karl helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Center for Possibilities and was actively involved with supporting the Tommy Schuman Foundation. He was rarely seen without his Tommy Schuman Foundation hat on his head.
Rest in peace, Karl. You were deeply loved, endlessly funny, and one of a kind. We’re sure Heaven’s wiring is already running more efficiently—and maybe just a little louder—with you there. In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider making a charitable donation to the Tommy Schuman Foundation@ https://www.tommyschumanfoundation.org/donate.html
