Gilbert H. “Gibo” Vera, age 71, of Hammond, IN passed away peacefully, Monday, September 13, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Gibo is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene (Alcala) Vera; 2 daughters: Gina (Alejandro) Gonzalez and Jillian (Daniel) Mojica; 1 son, Gilbert (Aurora) Vera, Jr.; 6 granddaughters: Alejandrina (Andrew) Rico, Alejandra Gonzalez, Alexis Gonzalez, Delia Vera, Celeste Vera and Eulalia Mojica; 3 grandsons, Alex Gonzalez, Daniel Mojica, Jr., and Damian Mendieta; 1 great grandson, Lincoln Barnes; 1 great granddaughter, Camila Rico; 3 brothers: Armando Vera, Richard (Yolanda) Vera and Mario (Anne) Vera; 1 sister, Irma (late Benny) Layton; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents: Benancio and Juanita Vera; brothers: Benancio Vera Jr., Paul Mendoza, and Arthur Vera.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN. Father Ivan Carrillo will hold a prayer service at 6:00 pm at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Gilbert was an employee of the City of East Chicago with over 20 years of service; member of the Teamster’s Union Local #42; he enjoyed gardening around the house and was an avid Cubs fan; a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
