Jesus Torres Obituary

Jesus Torres, age 96 of East Chicago, IN passed away Sunday, May 3, 2026 at home.

Jesus Torres was born to Epigmenio Torres and Maria de la Luz Aviles de Torres in Cuidad Manuel Doblado, Guanajuato, Mexico on May 4, 1929.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Manuela Torres, 82, on April 10, 2017; and his brothers Martin (Ramona) Torres, of Ciudad Manuel Doblado, Gto, Mexico and Miguel (Luz) Torres, of Coalinga, California, along with his sister Francisca (Silvestre) Lopez, of Manuel Doblado, Gto., Mexico.

Jesus Torres is survived by four children: Hilda (Javier) De Leon, Patricio Torres, Gricela (Michael) Puente and Robert (Delia) Torres; four grandchildren: Michael Torres, Stephanie Puente, Rebeca Torres and Jessica Puente; one great granddaughter, Michaela Torres. He is also survived by three sisters Ofelia, Maria, Crispina, all living in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Jesus Torres was a veteran of the Mexican Army. He assisted his father with taking care of cattle and selling the meat to customers. In his hometown, Jesus loved riding horses and his motorcycle. In the mid 1950s, he made his way to the Chicago area to establish himself before returning to Mexico to marry Manuela in October 1958. They both soon made their way to the United States to live, work and raise a family.

He worked a variety of jobs including Brach’s Candy Company and St. Anne's Hospital in Chicago and lived part of life in Cicero and Oak Park, Illinois before eventually moving to East Chicago, Indiana to work at Inland Steel Company. In his retirement years, he worked part-time at the Dyer Auto Auction in Dyer, Indiana.

He loved Mexican music, collecting CDs, vinyl records, dancing when he was younger in Chicago halls like the Aragon Ballroom, and always liked learning new things like computers and electrical wiring at JobLink2000 in East Chicago even after he retired from Inland Steel.

He was devoted to his family and his Catholic faith and wanted his children to get an education. He was proud of his grandchildren and attended college graduation ceremonies for granddaughters Rebecca Torres from Hyles-Anderson College and Stephanie Puente from Indiana University Northwest. He got to see his grandson Michael Torres graduate from Portage High School and his granddaughter Jessica Puente from Merrillville High School.

He returned often to his hometown of Manuel Doblado to visit.
