Jose Luis Cantu Garza

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jose Luis Cantu Garza, 87, from Hammond, Indiana, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Born on August 19, 1937, in Cienega de Flores, Mexico, Jose lived a life rooted in hard work, love, laughter, and devotion to his family.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Felicitas and Juan Jose Cantu Garza, and his brothers Enrique and Reuben. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Lillia, Angelica, Fela, Maria Elena, Lupe, Juan, and Alvaro.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria; his daughter, Myrna, and her husband, Francisco; his grandchildren, Robert and Kristen, and Kristen’s husband, Jorge. Jose was especially proud to be a great-grandfather to Mia and Lucia, and his family was always the center of his life.

Jose was a man of strength and integrity who provided for his family with unwavering dedication and love. He spent many years working at the blast furnace at Inland Steel, where he formed lifelong friendships. After retiring, his work ethic and vibrant spirit led him to begin a second career at a local casino, where he enjoyed connecting with people and brightening their days.

Jose enjoyed watching sports, spending time at the casino, and making cherished memories with his family. Known for his incredible sense of direction and a wealth of knowledge about the world, he left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him with his kindness and sense of humor. He was the heart of our family, and though our hearts ache, we are comforted knowing he is at peace and watching over us.

Visitation at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN will be from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.  Private cremation to follow.  Rev.
