Joseph “ Joweto” Vasquez, age 68 of East Chicago, IN passed away Friday, January 27, 2023. Joweto is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Gina (Nee Lopez) Vasquez; six children: Lil’ Joe (Angelica), Frank (Jenni), Ruben (EB), Alex (Melisa), Corey, and Vanessa; 15 grandchildren: Destiny, Mariah, Frankie, Javie, Brianne, Andrew, Emma, Nate, Lil’ Ruben, Alexis, Bianca, Celeste, Julianna, Audree, and Cali; 7 great grandchildren: Emma, Dominique, D’Angelo, Alaia, Kimiane, Elijah, Jade, and one on the way, Isabella; brother, Jerry Vasquez; sisters: Gloria Tuttle and Maria Elena Sanchez; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his mother, Gregloria Salas; and 3 brothers: Oscar, Bobby and George.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN with Funeral Services beginning at 4:00 pm with Pastor Clifford Holmes officiating. American Legion Allied Post #369 will have Legion Service at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Private Cremation to follow.
Joweto was a life-long resident of East Chicago; Most known as a DJ for over 38 years “Joweto’s Golden Oldies”; always willing to volunteer his services to the community; during his lifetime he also worked for the City of East Chicago, School City of East Chicago, and the United States Postal Service. Joweto was a Marine Veteran and a member of American Legion East Chicago Emilio De La Garza Post #508. He was an avid Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears fan. Joweto loved having his family together, especially during the holidays and cook-outs. He had a one-of-a-kind “very loud” voice and always made people laugh; once you met him, you’d never forget him! He was loved and adored and will be truly missed by many. Joweto’s family would like to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of love and support shown to them at this difficult time.
