Juan Fernandez

Juan Fernandez, a proud Puerto Rican and beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away in April 13, 2026 at home in Hammond, Indiana at the age of 77. 

Juan was born on February 8, 1949, in Puerto Rico to Pablo and Delores Ramos-Fernandez. He carried great pride in his heritage and the life he built for his family. Juan dedicated 30 years of hard work as a steelworker at Cleveland-Cliffs and a union man with Local 1010, before retiring. His strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were qualities that defined him throughout his life.

He is lovingly remembered by Rose Fernandez, who cared for him faithfully until the end of his life. Juan was a devoted father to Maria D. Fernandez (Mari) and Juan P. Fernandez (Weto). He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Maria D. Fernandez, who passed away on May 16, 2021. He cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Dezmond Edwards (Demaris Hurst) and their daughter Dreama Edwards; Anastazia Edwards; Joziah Kelly and his daughter Asiyah; and Jaden Kelly. Johanna Fernandez is the youngest granddaughter who brought him great joy with her passion for dancing Latin Folklore. Juan was preceded in death by many of his siblings: Gloria, Julie, Ida, Lucy, Pablo, and Raul. He is survived by his brother Ismael. Juan had a deep love for his nieces and nephews and cared for them dearly.
 

Juan loved all of his children's friends and always treated them as family, including his own best friend, Nelson. Outside of work and family, Juan enjoyed fishing,boxing, La gallera, collecting baseball cards, cheering for the Chicago White Sox, and taking pride in his red Corvette. Above all, Juan's heart belonged to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for them extended beyond this life and will continue through the memories and legacy he leaves behind. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4

Visitation at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, April 20, 2026.
