Lilia "Yaya" (Cardenas) Higareda

Lilia “Yaya” Higareda, age 61 of East Chicago, IN passed away Monday, February 10, 2025.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 19 years, Luis A. Higareda in 2007.  She is survived by her parents, Antonio and Margarita Cardenas; daughter, Janette (Santiago) Higareda; siblings: Jose Luis (Alejandra) Cardenas, Veronica (Jesus) Ayala, Lorena (Jaime) Zamora, late Fabiola Guerrero (2021), Marco Antonio (Ilda) Cardenas, Lisa (Wilson) Garcia, Erica Cardenas and Eduardo (Christal) Cardenas; many nieces and nephews.

Yaya was undeniably an entertainer, always finding a way to bring laughter to those around her.  With her vibrant personality and quick wit, she could light up any room, proving that her small stature was no match for her larger-than-life presence.  Her deep affection for her nieces and nephews was evident in the countless hours spent playing games, sharing stories, and creating cherished memories.  However, the love she held for her daughter was truly boundless, a fierce bond that shaped their lives together.  Yaya’s joyful spirit and nurturing heart will be profoundly missed, but her memories will forever remain alive in our hearts, reminding us of the warmth and happiness she brought into our lives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 3510 Deodar Street, East Chicago, IN with Rev. Luis Ferneidy Iral Cardona officiating.  Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond, IN.  Visitation at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, February 17, 2025 and from 9:30 am to 10:00 am at the Church on Tuesday morning..
