Lorraine F. (Hemm) Sliger

Lorraine F. Sliger, (nee Hemm), age 77, of Crown Point, IN formerly of East Chicago IN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Friday, June 6, 2025. Lorraine is survived by her 3 children: Rebecca (Aaron) Sliger, Lori (Candice) Zeleznik, Francis (Jose) Herrera. 2 Siblings: John (Patty) Hemm, Barbara (Carlos) Alvarez. 1 Grandchild: Jose Herrera III. Many nieces and nephews she treated as if they were her own children: Aaron (Nicole) Alvarez, Amanda Alvarez, Shannon Hemm, Stefanie Hemm, Shellee (Dan) Whitefoot, Mary Myers, Alexander Alvarez, Adrianna Alvarez, Jaden Alvarez, Amari Gatses, Gavin Hemm-Boland, Blake Meier, Avery Meier, Tierney Whitefoot. Preceded in death by her parents John & Bernice Hemm; sister, Nancy Alvarez-Camarillo; Nephews, Steven Myers & Chester Myers.

Visitation at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025.  Private cremation to follow. American Legion Post #508 will conduct Military Honors at 1:30 pm and Rev. Terry Steffens will hold services at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Lorraine lived a full life starting her journey as a nun and nurse with the Franciscan order in Illinois. Working in the birthing center of the hospital decided she wanted her own children and left the order. She enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam war as a combat medic. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 508. For the last 30 years she was employed by the School City of East Chicago where she served as a classroom aid, summer school aid, and most currently for the last 18 years the librarian at Washington Elementary.
