Margarita (Fernandez) Godinez

Margarita Godinez, née Fernandez, age 63, of East Chicago, Indiana, passed away on March 6, 2026, in Michoacán, Mexico.

One of nine children, Margarita was born and raised in Michoacán, Mexico. She married Francisco Godinez, who would become her husband of 47 years. Together they built a life dividing their time between Indiana and Michoacán while raising their children and providing them with the best opportunities possible.

Margarita had a deep appreciation for nature and enjoyed spending time outdoors. She loved cooking elaborate meals for friends and family and took great pride in staying physically active. Running, walking, and staying in shape were important to her. 

She is survived by her husband, Francisco Godinez; her children, Francisco Godinez Jr. (Estela), Salvador Godinez (Denise), and Crystal Godinez (Alvaro). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Jubilee Perez, Francisco Godinez III, Rebeca Godinez, Maria Fernanda Godinez, Emiliano Godinez, and Sebastian Godinez.

Margarita was preceded in death by her parents, Rebeca Zamora and Emiliano Fernandez.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 16, 2026 at 10:30 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 3510 Deodar Street, East Chicago, Indiana, with Rev. Terry Steffens officiating.  Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, Indiana.  Visitation will be on Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, Indiana; and again on Monday, March 16, 2026 from 10:00 am until the time of the Mass at 10:30 am at Church.
