Maria De Lourdes “Tuts” Pizana, age 58 of Hobart, IN passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at home. She is survived by 3 children: Anthony C. Pizana, Juliette I. Ortiz and Samantha Y. Ortiz; siblings: Blanca (late Mauricio) Avila, Maria T. (Jaime) Hernandez, Alejandra (Jaime) Lopez, Maria del Rosario (late Jose) Silva, Guadalupe (Pedro) Molina, Maria De Los Angeles (Felipe) Oria; Raquel (Rogelio) Oria and Marisa C. (Sergio) Salazar; numerous nieces and nephews; pet cats, “Thea”, “Prince” and “Bolt”. Preceded in death by her spouse, David “Papi” Ortiz; parents, Maurico Avila and Elpidia Molina; brothers: Telesforo, Mario, Guillermo, Antonio, Jesus and Efren: sister, Sonia Margarita.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 10:30 am at St. Mary Church, 802 West 144th Street, East Chicago, IN with Rev. Jaime Perea officiating. Burial to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Visitation at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 and from 9:30 am to 10:00 am Thursday morning.
Maria was an Accountant for Garcia Consulting Engineers, Hammond, IN. Maria was an outstanding State Director for Indiana LULAC, a President of Duneland (Council #5016) located in Chesterton, IN, and a National Vice-President for LULAC’s young adults. She was an active volunteer at St. Mary School, Griffith, IN. She proved herself as a activist, became a leader in the Hispanic community, especially with the youth. Maria was also a part of the Cursillo Movement in Northwest Indiana and a part of the She-squatchers. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated.
