Maria "Tita" Orta

Maria “Tita” Orta, age 97 of Portage, Indiana, formerly of East Chicago, Indiana, passed away Monday, September 29, 2025 at home. Maria is survived by two children: Francisco J. (Winna) Orta and Yolanda Martinez; grandchildren:  Juan Carlos (Amanda) Murillo, Jose L. (Kelly) Martinez, Veronica (Mario) Torres, Jaime (Stephanie) Martinez, Sergio Orta, Michael (Christina) Torres, Alfredo Orta, Victor Orta, Julius Barocio, and Yessenia Amaris (Taha) Orta; and many great grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Carlos Orta; children: Leticia (late Juan A.) Murillo, Carlos Orta, and Alfredo Orta; grandchild, Xavier Orta; son-in-law, Jose Luis Martinez; and parents: Cirilo and Maria Dolores Acosta.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 10:00 am at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, Indiana, with Chaplain Hector Trevino officiating.  Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, and again on Saurday from 9:00 to 10:00 am at the funeral home.

Maria was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love language was cooking for her family that she gathered every Sunday, as Sundays were her holiday.  She lived ninety-seven years with love and grace; welcomed all with an open heart and her strength carried her family through.  Maria was the definition of strength; whether it was a broken hip or the loss of a child, that woman kept pushing forward.  Her spirit will live on in our memories; gently guiding the hearts of those she loved.  She is loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.  "Mom, words cannot express the love we have for you.  We will always remember you in our hearts and souls until one day we will all be together again."
