Wilfredo “Willy” Velez age 80 of East Chicago, Indiana went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 10, 2021. He was born April 5, 1941 in Utuado, Puerto Rico to the late Longino and Matilde Velez. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Alicia M. Velez, children Kenneth (Mayra) Velez, Yvette (John) Figueroa, Jeffrey (Lynda) Velez, and Lisette (Greg) Talaga, sister Lydia (late Jose) Ortiz, 16 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister Blanca I. (Enrique) Sanchez.
Wilfredo was employed by Inland Steel in September of 1964 and retired in August of 1996. Some of Wilfredo’s favorite hobbies included drawing, walking, bicycling, fishing and boating with his very close brother in law Israel Aponte. Willy also enjoyed a good ice cream cone, traveling and watching boxing but most of all loved spending time with his family. He was an amazing husband, father and the best grandpa ever. Willy had a contagious personality and made friends wherever he went. Willy was known as the neighborhood Dad.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 10:00 am at the FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN with Pastor Moses Paez officiating. Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN.
