Pedro Gutierrez

Pedro Gutierrez, age 90 of East Chicago, IN passed away Friday, October 23, 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Esperanza; his six sons and two daughters, Salvador Gutierrez, Robert (Esther) Gutierrez, George (Carmen) Gutierrez, Richard (Monica) Gutierrez, Michael Gutierrez, Anthony Gutierrez, Linda (Daniel) Maldonado, and Rosemary (Raul) Estefania. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great/great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, daughter, Gloria Herrera, and grandson, Santiago “Jimmy” Morales. 

Pedro was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Pedro and his wife, Esperanza, settled in East Chicago from California in search of work. Pedro worked hard to support his family and raise his children. Eventually, he retired from Inland Steel after 33 1/2 years of service. There was always a pool table nearby in the Gutierrez house, and Pedro enjoyed the sport so much, he made a business of it. In the early 80s, Pedro opened Main Pool Room, where he spent his leisure time as well as his retirement.  Pedro took pride in his family and his Mexican roots. He loved his family dearly, especially his mother who he took care of and visited her often. Mexico became a yearly destination of many family road trips, often with all nine kids in tow. He continued these trips well into his twilight years. 

Pedro was a strong courageous man whose generosity has blessed many. He made anyone who entered his home feel like family. He instilled these values into not only his children but also his grandchildren. Even with nine kids and an endless amount of grandkids, he still had more than enough love to share. His faith was a great part of his life; he prayed daily and attributed his life’s successes to God. 

Pedro was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by many. He will never be forgotten and may his legacy live on through all of us. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 10:00 am at FIFE FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN with Pastor Guillermo Rios officiating.  Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond, IN.  Visitation at FIFE FUNERAL HOME will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 and from 9:00 am to 10:00 am Thursday morning.
